1. Major Irrigation Projects & Capacity Creation
•Budget 2026–27 Allocation: Dedicated allocation of ₹18,290 crore for irrigation and flood-control schemes.
•Combined Irrigation Capacity Created/Restored: Major schemes added or restored 4.49 lakh hectares of irrigation potential across Uttar Pradesh.
•Flagship Irrigation Projects:
•Madhya Ganga Canal Project Stage-II: Utilizes surplus Ganga floodwater during monsoon to irrigate western districts including Bulandshahr, Sambhal, Amroha, and Moradabad.
•Kanhar Irrigation Project: Located in tribal-dominated Sonbhadra district on the Kanhar river, providing assured irrigation to drought-prone upland blocks.
•Ken–Betwa Link Project (KBLP): India's first national river interlinking project transferring surplus water from Ken basin to Betwa basin, directly benefiting Bundelkhand districts (Banda, Mahoba, Jhansi, Lalitpur).
•Bhaurat Dam Project: Located in Lalitpur district of Bundelkhand to capture seasonal runoff for canal networks.
2. State Tube-Well Modernisation & Groundwater Management
•Tube-Well Installations in 2025–26:
•2,100 new state tube-wells constructed.
•569 failed/defunct state tube-wells reconstructed.
•Irrigation capacity created/restored: approximately 1.62 lakh hectares.
•Farming households benefited: approximately 1.43 lakh families.
•Groundwater Stress (Mains Context): Western UP districts feature over-exploited and critical assessment units due to deep alluvial submersible pumping, contrasting with Bundelkhand's hard-rock aquifer limitations.
3. Flood Management & UNDP Disaster Risk Reduction Framework
•Flood Control Schemes: Completed 285 flood-control projects in 2025–26, protecting a population of 49.90 lakh from inundation.
•Drain Desilting & Cleaning: Completed cleaning of 11,065 km of natural drainage channels and canals to prevent waterlogging.
•UNDP–UP Disaster Risk Reduction Accord: Historic MoU signed on 16 July 2025 between UNDP and Uttar Pradesh Government to build institutional capacity, early warning dissemination, and climate-resilient disaster governance.
•Multi-Purpose Flood Shelters: Planned and constructed across 7 highly sensitive districts of eastern UP (Gorakhpur, Ballia, Bahraich, Gonda, Siddharthnagar, Maharajganj, Deoria).
•Regional Hydrological Duality: Purvanchal faces recurrent monsoon flooding from Himalayan rivers (Ghaghara, Rapti, Sharda, Gandak), whereas Bundelkhand suffers from meteorological droughts.
